How bed bugs got me what I wanted
a love story about a mattress and how the universe sends a feather, a brick, and a mack truck to get our attention
Let me start this article by saying clearly… I hate bed bugs. They are creepy and invasive and leave you slightly traumatized to every tickle on your skin.
At almost fifty, I was hoping this story would be one I never had to tell.
Alas, when we don’t listen to our own inner nudges, Spirit comes in to make sure we get the message.
Which is how this story unfolds.
It all began in 2020 when my husband and I moved across country and bought our very first brand new mattress. We spent hours in Leon’s Furniture flopping from one mattress to the next, giggling like school children.
When we finally found the mattress that we both loved, we excitedly awaited the day it arrived in our new house, feeling like a new chapter in our lives had just begun.
That mattress was incredible. We talked about it all the time. How we loved it. How much we looked forward to getting into bed each night. The mattress was a part of our family; we loved it that much.
Then in 2022 we had to make a difficult decision. Things back across the country had taken a nose dive and we decided it was important for us to go back and tend to the issues that had arisen.
Instead of carting all our furniture back across country, we decided to sell it all and start fresh when we got there.
When we drove across country and landed back home, we didn’t know if we would be staying, so we rented a small townhouse and filled it with furniture we wouldn’t feel bad leaving behind in a year. In that house alone we bought two different mattresses. The first was wildly uncomfortable and the second became comfortable with a thick mattress pad over it.
Then in a turn of events, we ended up moving in with my in laws for a year and we put our furniture in storage. One week into living there, we had a flood in our storage unit, and lost all our furniture. You can’t make this up.
When we moved out of my in laws we once again found ourselves buying furniture for a full house and just grabbed another second hand mattress to fill our room.
It was the worst mattress of the whole lot of them.
Finally in October of last year we moved into the townhouse I have wanted to live in for years. It’s in the best part of town, close to the beach, and big enough to hold my husband, son and I comfortably.
It felt like a dream to finally land somewhere we wanted to be after years of upheaval.
Then four months ago I got hives.
Each morning I would wake up, walk to the full length mirror in my bedroom and assess where the new bumps were. They showed up on my arms, my legs, my back, my hands, my feet, and even my bum and boobs.
I changed my laundry detergent, my pillows, made a doctors appointment, got a referral to an allergist, had my husband check the bed for bugs… nothing. The hives persisted for ten weeks until at the beginning of June I went to Austin, TX.
Within 48 hours my hives were gone. GONE. I thought somehow I was less stressed in a new environment and enjoyed the relief of not smothering calamine lotion all over my body countless times a day.
After five weeks in Austin, I got the dreaded phone call from my husband. He saw a bed bug on our headboard.
I immediately let the property management team know and they informed us they would have our unit and any units around us with bed bugs treated.
As an intuitive I KNEW we weren’t the source of the infestation. We sleep naked and put NOTHING on our bed from outside our room. Not to mention the bed bugs were no where else in our house. ONLY in the bed.
When treatment day came, I learned we weren’t the source and the bed bugs had found a way in from the neighbouring unit and only infested our bed.
As a channel and psychic, I’m always asking my team of light why? Why did we need to get bed bugs. What was the point? They were offensive and gross and gave me heeby jeebies. It just didn’t seem fair.
This is when they showed me the full picture.
From the time my husband I arrived back home, all we talked about was the day we would buy our favourite mattress again.
Yet we never bought it.
The Universe is ALWAYS responding to our thoughts, and my husband and I thought and talked about a our new mattress ALL THE TIME.
I believe in the feather, brick and mack truck theory, which states that Spirit is always trying to put us on the right path and it’s our job to listen.
Spirit first gives us the message softly, like a feather. Then if we don’t listen, Spirit gets our attention a little more firmly with a brick moment. Then if we are stubborn and still don’t listen we get our entire worlds rocked, like getting hit by a mack truck.
Bed bugs were our mack truck.
We had the opportunity to buy our mattress when we first moved here and we didn’t. We had a chance to buy our mattress when we hated the first one we bought second hand and we didn’t. We had a chance to buy our mattress after we lost our furniture in a flood and we didn’t.
The thing is, the mattress itself was never the story. It was how the mattress made us feel. It represented a level of abundance we both felt every morning when we woke up and every evening when we went to bed. It was luxurious and made us feel rich.
As we have been up-leveling ourselves since coming home, everything that is a lower frequency has been working it’s way out of lives.
We’ve upgraded houses, jobs, routines, foods… you name it.
Yet we hadn’t upgraded the our bed. The most sacred of all sacred spaces to me.
As much as I hated the experience of hives and living with bed bugs, I can appreciate what the Universe was doing in helping me manifest the mattress I love.
Which has lead to a complete makeover of our entire bedroom to a place we look forward to waking up and going to bed in each night.
The Universe is always responding to US. What we think, how we feel, what we believe in our unconscious minds.
If we were paying attention, we could have probably skipped the mack truck. The brick was pretty intense.
So let me ask you this, where in your life are you being guided towards what you want and are missing the signs?
Have you had your own feather, brick and mack truck moment?
I would love to hear yours in the comments below!
