What I read in February
and a beautiful grounding cord exercise
At the end of every month I open my Clever Fox journal and I reflect on the month that just passed.
It’s one of my favourite practices.
In my book I write everything I do. A walk to the beach, alone or with my husband. Adventures with my son to our favourite stores. Dinners and dates. Marketplace finds that fill my house with joy. Days I go to the gym. It’s all recorded.
Then at the end of the month, I sit and feel grateful for all the magic that was experienced throughout the month.
For instance, in February, I walked outside eight times.
As a recovering winter hater, knowing that I now find deep pleasure in finding days where the sun is shining to get outside and appreciate the beauty and stillness the cold and snow offer, is a huge celebration.
This is a picture of Lake Ontario as it began thawing. It was so cold this year, that the waves froze as they were cresting the beach. The entire Lake was covered in ice, then slowly, over two days of warmth, it began to melt.
On this particular day it was so quiet, I heard a goose party over the lake. I couldn’t see them, but the joy of their honking filled the air and brought laughter to my heart. My husband and I the only people on the beach. A gift from mother nature.
February was also a month for organizing my new house. I’m a Facebook Marketplace connoisseur, finding beautiful things like a crow collecting shiny treasures. After four months of living in my dream home, I completed my office with a new rug and pouf for my morning journaling chair.
My biggest celebration is that soon, by the end of today, all the brown boxes from moving will be emptied. It’s been over three years since we have had all our personal belongings out of storage and boxes. In February we brought 4 bookshelves to the basement, with one more being picked up today, and finally, I will be able to see and touch everything again.
Books, art supplies, memories all at my fingertips. Words can’t describe how grounded this helps me feel, and how emotional it makes me. For the first time since I moved home to Ontario I feel rooted. My wings can open now. It’s time.
With two birthdays (my oldest and husband) and love day (what I call Valentine’s day) also filling my calendar, I still carved out time to read, completing nine books which I’m excited to share with you.
Books I read in February…
FICTION
I’m glad this book came with a trigger warning. It was some of the darkest material I have read and I really questioned if I could finish it. I had bought it because the art and sprayed edges spoke to me, but I didn’t quite understand the level of dark occult and lack of consent this book would hold. I finished it, and wouldn’t recommend it unless you enjoyed forced intimacy and blood sacrifice. Did I mention it was the darkest book I’ve ever read.
When I ordered the first book online, I didn’t know I wouldn’t like it, so at the time I had ordered the second book in the series as well. They were on sale and my mind told me that I loved books about witches, even if they were dark occult. Even though I struggled through the first book, I found myself caught in the depth of the story so I read the second book. It still upset me. I will say kudos to the author, she definitely made me feel things, they weren’t happy things, but they were things.
The Black Witch series by Laurie Forest is the most political fantasy series I have ever read. The series began in 2017 and this was the final book in the series, published in 2025. For the last nine years I have felt this series mirror back to me world events seen through the eyes of this author. In this final book she gave us the answer to heal our differences and find peace. It was a heavy book full of war, loss, and love. Because of this it took me two weeks to read it. This series is a powerful mirror to the separation that plagues our world, and the corrupt power of one group of people believing they are better than others. Highly recommend.
Opening Belladonna felt like opening the windows on a warm spring day, letting new life in. After a month of heavy reading, this book was a balm to my soul. Adalyn Grace is a gifted writer, painting her story with such ease, I became completely lost in the narrative. From the first chapter I was hooked and since I didn’t know it was a magical mystery, I couldn’t put the book down. A whodunnit really gets me, and this one didn’t disappoint.
The ending of Belladonna finished on a cliffhanger, which meant I immediately read the second book in the series, Foxglove. New characters were introduced and the whodunnit continued. There is nothing better than a series that makes you try to guess who the killer is and why, while also weaving in deities, magic, and high society. Think Bridgerton with magic and you get the vibes.
NON FICTION
This month in Lunar Witch Society we worked with Kuan Yin, and this book was a beautiful story of one mans journey in understanding his relationship with this Bodhisattva. Kuan Yin is the Goddess of love and compassion and personally, I felt a deep kinship with her. Reading her stories in this book, and spending time with her in meditation taught me the importance of keeping my heart open, even in troubled times, personally and globally.
I LOVE Meggan Watterson. Mary Magdelene Revealed, her first book, is one of my favourite books of all time. Weaving personal story with scripture from The Acts of Paul of Thecla, Meggan teaches us in The Girl Who Baptized Herself the power of listening inwards and using our voices collectively. It’s a powerful book of reclamation, reminding us that as women, our voices impact when we raise them together.
This book came to me through The Cottage Fairy. I have followed this YouTuber for years and in February joined her Patreon. Each month we read a book together, and for the month of February it was The Serviceberry. This book spoke to the importance of cultivating a reciprocal relationship with nature, and how this opens pathways of abundance beyond the material world. As I walked,I listened. It felt right and reverent to be amongst the trees while listening. The audiobook is just over 2 hours long, but the message is everlasting. This book leaves a lasting impression.
This book is a staple in my literary diet, one I come back to over and over again. I’m probably on my third or fourth re-reading. Born in 1871, Florence Shinn carved a name for herself as a metaphysical thought leader and author. This book is the fundamental truth that what we speak we create. If you like the bible taught through the lens of metaphysics and want to know exactly how to change your reality, then this book is for you. Hands down one I will continue coming back to this book to remember the basic fundamentals of The Game of Life and How to Play It (the name of the first book is her complete works).
In business I continue to allow my perfect clients to find their way to me. Trusting that when someone is ready to break repeating cycles of behaviours, and to heal a deep level, my name finds it’s way into their lives.
I’m also enjoying playing in YouTube. If you remember, I began uploading shorts at the beginning of January when Spirit nudged me to. At the time I was at 217 subscribers, and when I hit 2018 I would begin. Today I’m at 443 subscribers and am having the most amazing conversations.
In the comments of one of my shorts where I shared a technique I use to ground myself, someone asked for a more in-depth description of how to do the practice.
The practice teaches you to set your energy field so emotions and energies that don’t belong to you don’t invade your body or state of wellness. It also sets a grounding cord into Mama Gaia giving you an outlet to release what isn’t yours as those energies enter your field. You can watch the video HERE.
If there is anything you want me to create a video about, please let me know. Creating content that matters is important to me.
There are big things happening in the world and as a sensitive I know it can be hard to look at it all. To watch and be present in your body as people are hurt and hurting.
This month on my other Substack, Diary of a Sensitive Soul, I will be sharing how to be open to world events, without taking in the pain of the collective. If you want to receive that email, you can follow me HERE.
I love you and I hope you are honouring yourself and your needs at this time.
For those who have family and friends impacted by global events, my prayers go out to them and to you.
Sending you love and blessings,
