The books I read in March
and the most terrifying thing I've done in years
In August of 2022 I moved back to Ontario after living away for two years. Since then I have moved 5 times. That’s five moves in three years.
My entire energy has been focused on finding a new place, packing, moving, and then unpacking… again and again.
Until October of last year when we moved into the EXACT house I have wanted since moving back to Ontario.
For the first time in YEARS I can focus on myself, my business, and how I can show up more fully in the work I do.
This lead me to thinking about what it would feel like to step back into a business coaching container again.
Not because my business wasn’t doing great, but because I’m tired of doing it alone. I wanted to be in a community with other women doing amazing things; believing in themselves and going after their dreams.
Which leads me to the most terrifying thing I have done in years.
The last coaching container I exited from five years ago cost me my belief in myself and hundreds of thousands of dollars.
When I left working with that coach I didn’t think I would ever work with another business coach again.
But I knew that in order to fully heal from this, I needed to put myself into a safe container where any unhealed emotions could come up for me to work through.
Like when I moved back to Ontario.
I moved away to heal from my childhood trauma, which was beautiful, but it wasn’t until I moved back that I anchored in that healing. Seeing how the work I had done while away played out in real time.
When I thought about stepping back into coaching, I took my time. Contemplated why I wanted to work with a coach, who I felt safe with, and how I wanted to show up in the container.
Which lead me to saying yes to one of the most generous, caring coaches I have ever had, Amber Lilyestrom.
On our first group coaching call I burst into tears and asked how I could let go of the shame I carried from giving myself and my money away to someone else. She looked at me and said, “I knew you before you made those decision, I know your soul”. Then she told me to put it down. To stop carrying it.
The release I felt was immediate.
Through doing the very thing that scared me the most, I have stepped through a threshold in my energy that feels like a new day dawning.
Remembering why I do the work I do and the amazing transformations that my clients have experienced over the last nine years.
I’ve got some fun things to share at the end of this email with you!
Now on to the books I read in March!!
Fiction:
An Arcane Inheritance by Kamilah Cole. Every March I find a new black author to read and this March I fell in love with Kamilah Cole! This book was slow to start then randomly I couldn’t put it down. Not to mention my mind was blown at the end. I did not see the ending coming (and I’m pretty good at picking up who did it in who dun its). If you like dark acadamia loaded with ancestral magic and wild twists and turns, you will enjoy this book.
Wisteria by Andalyn Grace. This was the third book in this series and it was ok. It didn’t hold the same intensity that the first two captured in my opinion. This book read more like an enemies to lovers story versus the high pace who dun it mystery vibe of Belladonna and Foxglove. Enjoyable yes, but not as much as the others.
I’m already going to cry sharing about the last two books I read this month. This series had been one of my absolute favourites of all time (and that’s saying a lot). Even this book Beyond the Veil by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti (who are sisters) I loved. I’m not usually someone who reads novellas or additional books in a series because I find them to be stuffed with fluff, but this book was pure magic. Not only did it remind me of all the events that happened in the previous book, it gave me the perspective from the dead parents of all my favourite characters. Don’t skip this book in the series.
Now I’m crying! I’m not ready for this series to be over!! The Zodiac Academy series is campy, spicy, magical, and special in a way I can’t describe. The way these sisters weave the story, build relationships, and make you fall in love with the characters is unparalleled to anything else I’ve read. Going into Restless Stars I savoured each page knowing that the end was coming. Caroline and Susanne did a brilliant job tying up the story and leaving me feeling completely sated. This series is a commitment but I promise you it is worth it. Please read it and then tell me all about what you are experiencing. Living it again through you is all I want now!
Non Fiction:
This month in Lunar Witch Society we communed with Hekate and since I had read The Morrigan by Courteny Weber I thought reading her journey with Hekate would give me the same experience I had with The Morrigan. It did not. My experience with Hekate was very different than the dark goddess vibes she wrote about in her book. Hekate came through for me in a much softer way so the book didn’t land as deeply as I had hoped. What I do like about Courtney’s writing is that she is a story teller. So the book is laden with personal experiences as well as the lore of the goddess.
Writing, Ceativity and Soul by Sue Monk Kidd was sent to me by a beautiful soul client and friend who knows how important writing is to me. This book was a gorgeous memoir filled with useable strategies to let your inner author soar. Each chapter filled me with deep love and gratitude for the magic of writing, and inspired me to want to read more than fantasy books. If you want to write but feel nervous to make that commitment, then this book is for you.
I listened to The Mountain is You by Brianna Wiest two years ago when I was in a dark place and it kicked my ass in the best way. It was confronting and forced me to look at a pattern I had never named before. Naming that pattern changed everything for me. Since this month felt like I was making a mountainous decision, I picked it up to read. I enjoyed the audio more. If you haven’t read this book before, I believe it has the potential to change your life. It did for me.
